Title:BEACHING AND RETRACTING SINGLE SCREW LANDING BOATS : the LCP(R) and the LCV [Main Title]
Film Number:ADM 227
Other titles:AMPHIBIOUS WARFARE [Series Title]
Summary: A step by step account of the management of a LCP(R).
Description: Reel One. Beach and surf conditions are critical in any landing. A text-book landing and unbeaching by LCP(R)s in rough conditions shows what can be done, but it requires considerable skill. To help develop this skill in the audience the film considers the effects of beach profiles, tide and surf action on a boat attempting to beach. Reel Two. Bowman's duties while the boat is beached - it may be necessary to move the boat to avoid stranding or broaching in changing tide conditions. Crossing a sand bar. Edging up shallow beaches. Use of the rudder to offset currents running parallel to the beach. Use of the throttle and rudder to clear sand built up astern of a craft beached for some time. Procedure for debeaching. Reel Three. Method of turning the boat after it has backed through the surf and how to ride big waves as the craft heads out to sea. The principles of landing and retraction are illustrated by film of a LCP(R)'s approach to and withdrawal from a beach with the commentator drawing attention to good and bad points of the operation. The general principles, so far illustrated with a LCP(R), also apply to the LCV, but there follows a section on the proper management of the LCV ramp, especially at the withdrawal: to turn into the sea with the ramp insufficiently raised is dangerous for a big wave boarding the craft could part the cables causing the ramp to act as a diving rudder, taking the boat "and you" to the bottom. A final valedictory comment urges the audience to retain a flexible approach to changeable conditions of sea, beach and weather. "You will have to modify your handling to fit the surf and beach you meet, working out techniques for handling in steep or shallow beaches, short and steep or long and rolling surfs."
