- Summary:
- Description: Film sequences not in chronological order. CUs of lattice mast of a Ruler Class escort carrier (either HMS Hunter or HMS Attacker) flying the Dutch, French, US and White Ensigns, and a 'V for Victory' flag. MS off the starboard beam of HMS Ceylon. Motor vessel carrying the Japanese delegation comes alongside the flagship, HMS Nelson, and the Japanese envoy, Captain Hidaka, and his staff are piped aboard - at the head of the gangway the Japanese naval officers look up and salute the British Ensign. Below decks, in Vice-Admiral Walker's cabin, the Japanese discuss the details of the surrender. Escorted by Captain Hilken, NOIC Penang, they then return to their own vessel which bears off and makes away - a BYMS ("British Yard Mine Sweeper") of the British minesweeping flotilla is visible in the background. Camera pans from the quarterdeck of Nelson, where a Royal Marines band is playing, over the harbour to Penang waterfront - HDML J.61 is secured alongside. Cut to quayside where Royal Marines disembark from LSI(M) - both Queen Emma and Princess Beatrix are alongside. Troops fall in for flag raising ceremony which is attended by leading Chinese and Malay citizens. A cordon of Japanese soldiers holds back the enthusiastic crowds. A marine detachment then marches off through the city, while others (including the cameraman) leave in trucks to round up the Japanese garrison. The populace lines the streets, cheering and clapping - citizens committee carries US and British flags with a banner inscribed WELCOME PARTY OF THE CHINESE COMMUNITY. Japanese officers of Naval SP landing force are given instructions by the British. Troops surrender their arms - a large pile of Type 99 (7.7mm) rifles accumulates - and stow kit and personal possessions into a LCM(1) for evacuation.
