- Title: EXERCISE FOMEX 20 [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 3511
- Other titles: POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - PERSIAN GULF [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Tribal Class frigates and landing craft exercise together off Jazirat al Yas Island in the Persian Gulf. Film is shot from HMS Mohawk and the frigate's Wasp helicopter.
- Description: The force lies at anchor off Yas Island. Mohawk exchanges signals with the headquarters ship HMS Meon - the Rhino ferry lies in the waters between the two ships. Pan over LST and the Ton Class minesweepers of the 9th Minesweeping Squadron, with Yas Island in the background. A LCA comes alongside Mohawk and paratroopers are embarked - the operation is overseen by the First Lieutenant, Lieutenant-Commander Barrow. Cameraship weighs anchor - the Cable Officer signals to the capstan and the cable and anchor are hosed down as they come in. Mohawk gets underway - Zulu and Ashanti in line astern. The cameraship closes astern of HMS Messina (L.3043) - a Wasp helicopter is carrying out a transfer on the LST. Mohawk comes abreast of Messina for a jackstay transfer of the frigate's marines to the landing ship - during this manoeuvre the cameraman goes aloft in Mohawk's Wasp and circles the two ships - Zulu's helicopter also flies past. Aerial LS of HMS Zulu (F.124) with LST Anzio (L.3003), and HA.MS from just astern of the empty Rhino ferry towed by Anzio. Camera-aircraft overflies Ashanti (F.117) and then climbs to give a more general view of the task force, the two frigates attending the LSTs in centre frame. Aerial MS off the port beam of Zulu, with the two other Tribals in the background. Cut to sequence on the flightdeck of Mohawk as FDO, Lieutenant-Commander Marsden, signals the Wasp to start up. The cameraman in the helicopter catches the shadow of the turning rotor head cast on the deck. Leading Air Mechanic Bailey casts off the lashings and the Wasp lifts off. LCT Parapet is in distant company with the frigate. CU left profile of the Wasp's pilot Lieutenant Kidd at the controls. Aerial LS of the force steaming in approximate line abreast, the camera-aircraft off to port of the formation then turning to cross its course. The helicopter returns to Mohawk, closing from the port quarter to land on - the frigate has two hoses playing over the port side. Final sequence showing Mohawk's Wasp taking off with PTA slung underneath to return it to Ashanti - the drone had been shot down by Mohawk during gunnery practice.
