Title:HARRIER TRIALS ONBOARD HMS HERMES [Allocated Title]
Film Number:ADM 4797
Other titles:POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
Summary:Trials of a Sea Harrier development aircraft, a Harrier GR 3, two T Mk 4s, and the Hawker Siddeley G-VTOL demonstrator. All onboard Hermes in Camarthen Bay.
Description:A record of take offs, flypasts and landings filmed from helicopter and onboard cameras. The initial group of aircraft are a T Mk 4, the demonstrator G-VTOL, and a Sea Harrier XZ 450. A RAF GR.3 then features - easily distinguished by an underwing load of drop tanks and 1,000-pound bombs. The GR.3 is then replaced by a T Mk 4 which has not been retrofitted with the RWR antenna in the fin and Ferranti LRMTS nose cone. This then disappears from the record, leaving the original three aircraft. A Whirlwind HU.5 of 845 Squadron and two Sea King HAS.2s of 814 Squadron serve as planeguard and photographic aircraft. No doubt incidentally, the film contains some fine aerial views of HMS Hermes steaming in the rough waters of the Irish Sea.
