- Title: HMS JUPITER AND HMS BATTLEAXE EXERCISE WITH USS ENGLAND [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 6385
- Other titles: THE ROYAL NAVY IN THE GULF, 1990-1991 [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: HMS Jupiter and HMS Battleaxe sail into the Northern Patrol Area and operate briefly with USS England.
- Description: Onboard HMS Battleaxe. LS as HMS Jupiter closes from port quarter to cross cameraship's wake. Jupiter falls in astern - a marine regards her through binoculars. Cut to interior of Lynx as aircraft runs up to take off. Aerial views of the two British frigates in line astern of the cruiser USS England (22) - as the helicopter circles the two frigates begin to turn, Battleaxe to starboard and Jupiter to port. Various excellent aerial views as ships adopt an arrowhead formation with the British trailing, then move into line abreast before the two frigates pull ahead and turn away - a manoeuvre which allows Battleaxe to demonstrate her very tight turning circle. While England remains on her original course, the frigates are now on a reciprocal heading - presumably the end of their group manoeuvres. Break. CU of CPO AEA(M) John Marshall standing by Lynx. Asked how thing are going he says that the helicopter, for which he is senior maintenance rating, has performed well. The main problem is manpower, with long hours worked in very high temperatures, so that 6-8 pints of water must be drunk every day. After initial disappointment that their Penang holiday was cut short, the general feeling is that there is a job to do and they are getting on with it. He sends regards to his family. Cut to the captain's cabin for interview with Commander Gordon-Lennox. General feeling of the crew: some disappointment at having the maintenance period at Penang cut short, and some of the younger ones are a bit apprehensive. Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Threat of chemical weapons: the ship is designed to withstand chemical attack, and ships are generally poor targets for such weapons. "An odious threat." Ship's activities in the past 24 hours: a "good snapshot" of their activities in the Gulf, they patrolled with Jupiter at the western end of the Straits of Hormuz, then moved up to the Northern Patrol Area where the Americans are located, and operated briefly with USS England. Now returning to Dubai. Ship is on defence watches. Action stations exercise yesterday. Onboard entertainments include sport: "those off watch have no excuse for becoming fat and flabby". Comments to those at home: if current situation holds they should relax and go about their business. "Be cautious in everything they hear and see on the television, newspapers and other media. We sometimes smile as we read the newspapers and listen to the World Service. Sometimes we are quite anguished as to what is being reported, and how different it is from what is actually happening out here." Families at home should remember those still trapped in Kuwait and Iraq - they need their thought and prayers most at the moment. Cut to interview with Lieutenant-Commander Harland, First Lieutenant on the bridge. General feeling of the crew: early disappointment and apprehension have faded and men are settling down into a routine in a "very tranquil Gulf". His description of the last 24 hours' activity, closely follows the captain's - he adds the detail that the patrol went as far as Ras Tannurah, north of Bahrain. Interview cuts in middle, to resume on 8099.
