- Title: EXERCISE MARINER [Allocated Title]
- Film Number: ADM 1443
- Other titles: POST-WAR NAVAL OPERATIONS - MISCELLANEOUS [Allocated Series Title]
- Summary: Joint Anglo-American exercise which encountered very heavy seas over a two-week period. The cameraship in Reel One is HMS Vanguard, which proved to be an exceptional sea boat, dry and stable under almost all conditions. In the remaining reels the camera moves to HMS Eagle.
- Description: Reel One. Opening sequence shows the cameraship HMS Vanguard refuelling at sea from the RFA Wave Victor - a Weapon Class destroyer (either HMS Battleaxe or HMS Broadsword) is also replenishing. A Westland Dragonfly from Eagle hovers over the quarterdeck in one shot. As the sea increases, the tanker makes off - in the heavy weather her bows dig in, sending up clouds of spray as they lift - HMS Decoy (D.106) is now in company with the tanker. MS broad on the port bow of Decoy - pitching head-on into heavy seas, the waves sometimes leave her bows unsupported. Sequence showing Vanguard closing on Wave Victor to resume fuelling - the two ships come very close, the tanker riding just off the battleship's starboard bow, as a line is passed. LS off the port quarter of Eagle in a gale, and HA over A and B turrets to focsle - very little water is being shipped over the bows despite the Force 9 conditions. Further shots of Eagle. Reel Two. HA aft from the island to the flightdeck of Eagle, crowded with Fireflies, AEW Skyraiders and Sea Hornets. Tractor No 3 moves a Firefly AS.6. Westland Dragonfly 901, part of the ship's flight, alights on deck. HA as an Attacker FB.2 is launched from the starboard catapult. Skyraider AEW.1 taxies forward to join others along the port deck edge. Aerial LS as the camera circles Eagle in a helicopter. Sequence showing HMS Scorpion alongside to take on fuel from the carrier. Further aerial shots showing Eagle and SS Wasp (18), the latter with a Piasecki tandem-rotor helicopter running up on her flightdeck. Various aircraft land on - Attacker 141, Skyraider 316 (serial WT 960), Hornets 487 and 486. Datecard 22 September: sequence showing Eagle weighing anchor. HA aft as Dragonfly 902 flies slowly along the deck and past the island. Deckcrewman refuels an Attacker. HA forward as Attackers are launched from port and starboard catapults. Two Fireflies take off. Datecard 24 September: CU of Lieutenant-Commander Wilson congratulating helicopter pilot Lieutenant S Bough on the success of his rescue work during several air accidents during the exercise. Further film of Attackers being launched and Fireflies taking off. Datecard 28 September: LS to destroyer on Eagle's starboard quarter - probably Scorpion. A White Ensign is hauled down - tattered after flying throughout two days of rough weather. Further shots of Scorpion refuelling from Eagle, and hauling party on the carrier's deck. Datecard 30 September: MCU of Wave Class tanker alongside Eagle. LSs of other ships of the fleet replenishing - including a Missouri Class battleship and two US carriers. A Piasecki Retriever alights on deck and Vice-Admiral T S Combs, USN, Commander of NATO Striking Fleet, Atlantic, and Rear-Admiral Hugh Goodwin, USN, Carrier Division Commander, disembark to be greeted by Vice-Admiral Hughes-Hallett, RN, Flag Officer Heavy Squadron, Home Fleet. When the two US officers depart Rear-Admiral Goodwin, seated with the pilot Captain Hurlbut, gives the cameraman a jaunty salute. Cut to aerial views of Eagle manoeuvring with US forces, including Wasp and Iowa. Minelayer USS Harry F Bauer passes diagonally left to right. Aerial LSs of cruiser HMS Sheffield and a US attack cargo ship. Reel Three. Aerial view of USS Iowa (61) - the helicopter then returns to Eagle to land on. Datecard 30 September: shots from deck-level as a flight of Attackers is launched from the two catapults, with CUs as strop is attached to catapult slide. Skyraider 310 takes off. Sea Hornets take off. CU as CPO uses signal searchlight. Lookout with spotting binoculars (the cameraman attempts to film through the eyepiece but achieves only a blurred image). CU of gyro compass repeater - the ship's heading is 170 degrees. LA of White Ensign streaming in stiff breeze. LS of dark lowering sky - two Attackers fly past right to left. HA aft from the island as an Attacker goes over having aborted a landing - a second touches down successfully. Three Sea Hornets fly past. HA aft as Sea Hornet 483 lands on. Final XLS over a darkening sea to a distant destroyer picked out in a patch of sunlight.
