Summary: Trials of the Swiss Roll floating roadway at Portsmouth Dockyard, September - November 1942.
Description: The roll of floating roadway is lowered into the water from the dockside and unravelled. A group of men standing on the floating roadway struggle to raise the kerb sides. Men are seen walking on the roadway. Numerous shots of a lorry and a jeep driving along the straight roadway. The roadway is also tested under a variety of conditions - the lorry driving along the roadway laid out with a curve, the lorry driving along the roadway whilst small waves are produced by a passing power boat and the lorry driving along the roadway rocked by heavy waves produced by a Motor Torpedo Boat (MTB) passing at speed. (The floating roadway heaves in the wake of the passing MTB and the lorry lurches dramatically but stays on the roadway.)
