Description: (Reel 1) Flags of Commonwealth nations – including Pakistan and Ceylon – arrayed on poles. Views of Royal Naval hospital. Sign reads “Fairlead Exhibition”. Naval VIPs, including Lord Mountbatten, exit doorway marked with the badge of HMS Neptune. They pass the War Memorial; the Trafalgar Tavern can be seen in the background. “Queen’s Visit to Fairlead”: naval party unfurl flags on poles. Spectators wave. Royal Marines detachment marches past. HM Queen Elizabeth II arrives by car and greets officers; she is shown around exhibits, including a whaler, a long range anti-submarine weapon, a Sea Slug mock-up (marked as being with HMS Girdleness). Afterwards, the Queen leaves by car.
(Reel 2) VIPs arrive in evening dress/dress uniform; amongst them is Harold Macmillan. They are greeted by Lord Mountbatten; HRH Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, is also present. A flag is unfurled over the exhibition hall alongside the Union Jack and the White Ensign. Royal Marines band plays in front of the Royal Naval Hospital (which is floodlit). Daytime: Duke of Edinburgh arrives and is greeted by Lord Mountbatten. Panning shot shows the the Commonwealth Chiefs of Staff in line. Further views of the Duke of Edinburgh’s visit – Julian Amery is there – and of the visit by HM Queen Elizabeth, who inspects a rubber inflatable lifeboat and an Asdic Type 170 Mobile Training Unit. She is also seen entering the “Queen Elizabeth II Ante Room”, and leaving by car.
(Reel 3) Press conference: Britain is represented by Lord Mountbatten. Interior views of exhibition hall, where an exhibition (not open to the public) showcasing ships, aircraft and equipment which it was anticipated would be in service by 1965. Among the exhibits shown are models, photographs, uniformed mannequins, a model lido nuclear reactor and mock-ups of cabins among others. Demonstration of underwater warfare; a model shows a nuclear submarine, partially surfaced, about to fire a Regulus II-type missile. Demonstration of homing warhead. Communications display. The Duke of Edinburgh and Lord Mountbatten leave the exhibition hall and view exterior exhibits (whaler, Sea Slug); also further footage of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
