Film Number:IWM 1137
Other titles:
Summary: Private film of 5th Yorks and Lancs on their campsite, near Scarborough, August 1922.
Description: The officer commanding 49th (West Riding) Division, Major-General M R Davies, and Colonel W M Withycombe, commanding 5th West Riding Infantry Brigade, to which the battalion belongs, confer with Lieutenant-Colonel S Rhodes, commanding the battalion, and his officers (all very camera-conscious throughout). The battalion forms up to be addressed by Rhodes, then marches off, with the Transport section bringing up the rear. At the tented camp the band parades for the guard to be changed. Food is prepared at the open air cookhouse and served in the mess tent. Battalion sports include a Band Race, a bun-and-treacle race for the boys, and a tug-of-war. The battalion concert party, "The Jazz Band", poses for the camera. Withycombe gives the prizes after the sports. Rhodes poses first with his adjutant and RSM, then with his officers. The warrant officers and sergeants pose drinking beer. On the return home the battalion arrives at Barnsley Station by train and marches up the hill to its drill hall for dismissal at the end of two weeks' training. Crowds of people, including children, flock round the final march.
