Summary: Rushes from Operation Grapple, a series of British atomic tests conducted on Malden Island in 1957.
Description: Reel one: Features round one (Short Granite). Detonation as viewed from Shackleton aircraft patrolling the area. Burst appears on the right hand side of the frame, with one of the Shackleton's wings visible in the left hand side. Various shots of later stages of cloud development.
Reel two: Features round two (Orange Herald). Views of detonation, partly obscured by cloud cover, and of HMS Narvik. Filmed using a variety of lenses including 150mm, 75mm and 40mm, fitted with a Wratten 85 filter.
Reel three: Features round two. Views of the fireball, followed by subsequent cloud development.
Reel four: Features round three (Purple Granite). Filmed onboard HMS Narvik. Views of fireball and subsequent mushroom cloud.
