Film Number:AWE 64
Other titles:BRITAIN'S ATOMIC WEAPONS RESEARCH PROGRAMME COLLECTION [Allocated Series Title]
Summary: Rushes from round three (codename Halliard 1) of Operation Grapple Z, a series of atomic weapons trials conducted on Christmas Island in the Pacific Ocean, in the summer of 1958.
Description: Reel one: Footage of burst, fireball and subsequent mushroom cloud development. Filmed using a Cameflex camera.
Reel two: Heavily filtered, very slow motion film of the fireball development following detonation. Shows clearly the change from spherical to quasitoroidal shape. Reel terminates at the point when the gas is insufficiently luminous to record on the filtered camera. Filmed using a Vinten 300 camera, at 150-250 frames per second.
Reel three: Collection of short sequences, including some filmed onboard a Shackleton observation aircraft, and some from the tail camera onboard one of the Valiants used in the trials. Excellent aerial shots of the detonation and cloud formation. Aerial shots of the balloon pad with the balloons flying. Good explosion shot and subsequent cloud formation.
