Summary: An edition of the British official newsreel "World Pictorial News", produced by the Ministry of Information, Middle East.
Description: I. 'NEWS FROM GERMANY.' Male factory workers recycle surplus German military helmets into kitchen utensils at the Fulda Enamel Works in Hessen. A male factory worker uses a hydraulic press to reshape helmets and cut off their rims. Drainage holes are stamped onto the helmets and handles are attached to make colanders. A male factory worker dips completed colanders into enamel paint and hangs them to dry. The process is repeated to make cooking pots.
II. 'SARDINIA- LOCUST PLAGUE.' Extended footage shows swarms of locusts moving across a Sardinian road and into fields. Sardinian field workers attempt to stem the insect invasion by using United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Agency (UNRRA) supplied flame-throwers. Field workers spray a mixture of sulphuric and chloric acids in an attempt to save their crops. The locust plague is described by the commentary as "an untimely setback in a world faced with famine."
III. 'THE DERBY.' Crowds gather at Epsom Race Course to view the Derby. Panoramic footage shows tipster's stands and tents belonging to Tom Courtney and Billy Boston. Crowds enjoy the attractions of the Epsom race day fair which includes a Ferris wheel, roundabout and chairaplane. The Royal family (King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and the princesses) arrive by car and are driven from Tattenham Corner to the Grandstand past cheering crowds. Highlights of the race follow.
IV. 'LONDON VICTORY CELEBRATIONS.' King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret disembark from the royal barge at the Houses of Parliament to view the Victory Day celebration fireworks and illuminated water display (night of June 8 1946.) Extended footage shows illuminated water spouts and spectacular firework display.
