A window onto the world, from the skies above

We’re celebrating UNESCO World Day for #AudiovisualHeritage with this exciting clip from a 1980s RAF recruiting film, giving us Top Gun vibes.

Produced around the time of the 1986 Hollywood hit, it shows what it’s like to be part of a squadron flying high in Tornado GR1 aircraft.

The film is part of IWM’s Cold War collection - from which over 2 million sound recordings, films and photographs have been digitised as part of IWM’s Digital Futures project, a multi-year preservation and digitisation initiative launched in 2020.

 IWM's Digitisation upon Demand service

IWM holds a vast and unique collection covering all aspects of modern conflict. In order to facilitate requests for non-digitised films outside of IWM's approved digitisation programme, there is a Digitisation on Demand service.

For further information, please contact us with the film titles of interest where there is no digitised media on the record.
