Staff Pick: Europe and America
Clip from Film: IWM (NAT 2065). Europe and America (1976)
As America celebrates its 250th anniversary of independence, Film Licensing Executive Evangeline Rouse highlights a Cold War documentary film produced by the North Atlantic Treaty Information Service (NATIS) to mark the bicentennial celebrations in 1976.
Using the American Revolution as a starting point, the film explores the interrelation of European thought and ideals with American values and the fight for independence. Narrated by actor Anthony Quayle, and often with a light-hearted tone, the film looks at the strong links between the continents. Through the identification of shared placenames, such as 'London, England' and 'London, Canada', and President John F Kennedy’s famous ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ speech, the film encapsulates the shared unity and history of each nation.
