Description:The training of an artificer is shown at all its stages. After the initial interview, there is a five year course (at HMS Raleigh shore establishment); after the first year, cadets specialise in air, weapons or marine engineering. Workshop training and apprenticeships at sea follow; BTEC diploma results. Artificers have to be trusted to keep all equipment serviceable: weapons etc may need to be used at short notice "as we saw in the South Atlantic in 1982". Promotion possibilities (could be Chief Petty Officer by age 25), and qualifications are valid when returning to civilian life.
