Summary: A brief profile of the history and culture of the NATO member country Denmark.
Description: The seas’ centrality to Denmark’s character is emphasised in the film’s opening. The geographical dispersal of the Kingdom of Denmark is indicated by map. Life on the east coast of Jutland is characterised as hard, while that inland is easier. The archipelago of Denmark necessitates many bridges and ferries. Harbours are particularly important as centres of communication and transport. Storstrøm bridge (Storstrømsbroen) is shown as the film moves to Copenhagen, whose harbour is pivotal to the city. Christiansborg Palace, home of the Danish Parliament is shown, as is a visit to Parliament by King Frederick IX and Queen consort Ingrid. The government of Denmark is briefly described, as is its commitment to a welfare state. Scenes illustrate care for the elderly, education of the young and the provision of hospitals. Denmark’s contribution to the battle against tuberculosis is briefly described. Danish farming is highlighted, its exports famous across the world. The packing of Maypole Butter is show. Two-thirds of Danish exports are agricultural and Danish farmers form voluntary co-operatives to protect against hardship. Danes are described as keen readers with interest and aptitude for crafts. Shipbuilding at Helsingør (Elsinore) is presented with views of the castle of Kronborg. Motor Torpedo Boats patrol the surrounding seas, while a voluntary home guard serves on land. Republic F-84 Thunderjets of the Royal Danish Air Force are shown taking off. Leisure scenes show Danes in allotments, at the seaside and sailing. At Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen people dance, dine and go on amusement rides. The film ends by returning to views of the coastline, noting how the sea connects Denmark to the world and the world to Denmark.
