Description: A long dyke with sea breaking gently, sheep grazing on side of dyke, and lorries driving along. Commentator gives information on the Netherland’s distinctive geographic features. Canals in the cities and street scenes contrast with the Netherlands of the new apartment blocks. City of Holland is the name given to the concentration of towns and cities between Amsterdam and The Hague where 6 million people live. Old canals, typical Dutch architecture and several paintings from the Dutch Masters. Population is increasing faster than in the rest of Europe: kids play around the canals. An animated map of Europe points at Holland’s strategic access to the North Sea. Sea and rivers trade activity: Cargo ships load and unload in ports and docks. New ship SETAS on launching slipway. Also the new coastal freighter ship ALCETAS is shown on slipway. Workers in dockyards, liner Nieuw Amsterdam cruiser. The Royal Netherland Navy and amphibious marine forces are shown in action, probably amidst a military exercise: assault troops landing crafts in nearing beach. Soldiers dashing ashore, running out of sea on to beach. Soldiers setting up bazooka gun on sand dune, soldiers firing guns, flame-thrower. Dutch spend almost ten per cent of their national budget on defence. They produce equipment for other NATO forces such as binoculars and microscopes. Images of lens makers in factory. Radiologist in hospital using this equipment. Radio and electrical centre in Eindhoven ships one tenth of all Dutch exports: Operators handling lamps. Also covered is the mining industry as Holland is part of the Coal and Steel Community. Some context of the mining industry is given while miners and mines are featured. Images of a nylon factory, as nylon is a coal by-product that “dresses the modern woman”. Operators in shoe factory. The ever growing population of Holland is the reason behind the thriving Dutch industry that produces all kinds of goods: busy street scenes, children playing. The nations family unit is represented by Queen Juliana which is seen in several situations: Queen Juliana, prince Bernhard and Princess Beatrix waving to the crowd, the Queen in the Royal opening of the Parliament…Building sites, houses under construction. There is a balance between land for building and land for agriculture: Dairy farming is well-regarded outside Holland as well. Butter and milk production, cheese produced in factories but also traditionally produced cheese still exists. Lettuces being picked and then transported through the canal by a porter to the market centre and loaded afterwards to an aircraft in the airport. Film ends with works being carried to take more land from the sea.
