Summary: A brief profile of the history and culture of the NATO member country Norway.
Description: Norway’s naval heritage is presented with scenes showing details from the Oseberg ship, Kon-Tiki, and the ship Fram, used in Roald Admundsen’s journey to the South Pole. Views of contemporary whaling follow. In the North-East of Norway north of the Artic circle, the border with Russia is shown as are iron mines at Kirkenes. Living standards are high here, with boats providing a vital lifeline, bringing in and carrying away goods. Fish is Norway’s prime export and many of its plants are owned cooperatively. As the seasons change the fisherman must also be farmers. What little arable land is available must be used. Heddal’s stave church is shown in a section emphasising the importance of forests to Norway. The generation of hydroelectricity provides cheap electricity to the country and is utilised in industrial production of aluminium. The exterior and interior of Oslo City Hall (Oslo Rådhus) are shown, introducing a section on Norwegian artistic practice. Several views show statues at Vigeland Sculpture Park. Leisure is characterised as consisting in fishing, boating, and skiing. Footage shows participants in the Holmenkollen Ski Festival. The exterior of the Headquarters of NATO’s Allied Forces Northern Europe (AFNORTH) is briefly shown before the film describes the defence of Norway. Norway’s climate and geography present a particular challenge. A ski-assisted motorcycle is shown as is a traditional reindeer sled used by Home Guard defence groups. A member of such a group is shown returning home to his family as the importance of family life in Norway is emphasised. Scenes from Norwegian Constitution Day are shown, with children marching as the Norwegian royal family look on. The Atlantic Community of NATO member nation’s is described as being Norway’s larger family.
