Summary: A North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) documentary that uses air power to demonstrate how nations adopted joint security objectives during the Cold War. Organised under the command of NATO’s Allied Forces Central Europe (AAFCE), various multi-national air defence system and aircraft are used to illustrate the collaborative work of these NATO forces.
Description: ‘Wings over Europe’ demonstrates how strategic air defence was conducted along the border of Europe’s East/West divide, not only with jet aircraft and anti-aircraft missiles, but with new technologies such as a network of computerised radar installations (see Project NADGE). The practise of joint reconnaissance gathering and AADCE pilot training are also profiled.
The rapid advances in missile technologies are profiled by an arsenal of weaponry, including the American Pershing and Nike missiles. Extensive coverage shows various jet aircraft operated by NATO members, including the British, French, Dutch, Belgian and American air forces. Of the many featured aircraft, there are included: RAF English Electric Lightning’s, Mirage fighters of the French Air Force, Royal Canadian Air Force Lockheed F-104 Starfighter’s, United States Air Force Republic F-105 Thunderchief’s and McDonnell F-101 Voodoo fighter jets.
