Summary: An overview of sixty years of naval firepower and strategy, from the first Dreadnought in 1904, through the two World Wars and into modern strategy and tactics including aircraft carriers and Polaris missiles. The role of SACLANT (Supreme Allied Command, Atlantic) is also discussed.
Description: A history of mechanised war at sea is combined with propaganda concerning the structure and role of the NATO "task force". Early submarines including Robert Fulton's; the aeroplane - Wright brothers, Theodore Roosevelt'd interest, his "Great White Fleet". Anglo-German naval rivalry; submarine success in Sea of Marmora, U-boats in Atlantic beaten by air-sea combination; Jutland - "affray of the giants". Submarines and carriers develop despite neglect, between wars. Second World War: large Luftwaffe and U-boat force rather than capital ships, pocket battleships avoid fleet action; the convoy, air attack and radar in reply. Pearl Harbor "a lesson never to be forgotten", the carrier now "all powerful" - Midway, "Tirpitz". "The defence of the West: NATO alliance, the modern carrier "the warhead of its task force" against which no aggressor can "deal... a Pearl Harbor. "True" submarines carrying Polaris missiles keep the peace till men realise the futility of war.
