Summary:Film features several stories; International Airline Control and Operation. Dutch Training Centre for Unskilled Workers. Greek sponge fishing.
Description:Passengers board a KLM flight, which then prepares for take-off. Ground crews are shown in communication with aircraft and each other, to control the movement of flights. International agreement has segregated the sky into channels of movement and districts of control, to ensure safety. Air traffic control provides new weather maps to flights every three hours. The approach of a plane to an area of bad weather is dramatised. The Captain makes a request to air traffic control, through an onboard radio operator, for a change of course. Permission is granted and the plane changes its path accordingly.
In Drenthe, The Netherlands, the traditional peat industry is no longer able to provide the community with enough work. The mechanised harvesting of peat is shown, its rate of production contrasting with that of manual harvesting. However new factories and industries in the region provide training and work for the former peat workers. The factory production of rayon is shown, as is the extraction of oil. One third of the oil needs of the country are now met domestically.
In Greece, Dodecanese divers are shown underwater diving for sponges. Their necessary rest – two hours for every fifteen minutes diving - is taken on their boat. Half of the world's sponge production comes from these waters. In the port of Kalymnos [Kalimnos] the film shows packing crates bound for London. The collection of sponges is dangerous work, and some of the injuries sustained are shown. To minimise the risk, port officials check all equipment and doctors perform health checks on all sailors before they depart. The narrator notes that Marshall Plan aid provides liquidity to the financing of the fleet, allowing it to sail. In celebration of the departure of the fleet, a group of women dance and a procession moves to the quay. Here a priest blesses the fleet and sailors kiss a cross. The fleet then leaves the port.
