KAISER WILHELM VISITS TURKEY [Alternative Title]
Summary: The visit of Kaiser Wilhelm II to Constantinople and the Gallipoli battlefields, Turkey, 15th-16th October 1917.
Description: (Reel 1) The Kaiser gets into the state barge and is rowed across the Bosphorus (tinted orange). On the far side he gets out to greet various German officials (tinting ends). He tours Topkapi, the old Serail, with his entourage, and relaxes briefly at the Medji Kiosk (summer house or pavilion). He visits the German battle cruiser SMS Goeben, given to the Turks as the Yavuz Sultan Selim along with its German crew, who wear Turkish insignia on their uniforms. Drawn up on the quarterdeck, they give three cheers for the Kaiser. (Tinted orange) On the following morning the Kaiser looks over the ship. With him is the Turkish Minister of War, Enver Pasha, Captain Ackermann on the Goeben and Admiral Georg von Müller. (Tinted green) The Kaiser wearing Turkish uniform boards a launch from the Goeben and is taken across to the fort at Hamadi. (Tinted orange) There at a conference over a map the battles of the Dardanelles are described to him by a Turkish general (tinting ends). Lunch is held in the open on the beach at Ari-Burnu. The camera pans over the Turkish positions on the coast at Ari-Burnu, with the island of Imbros indistinctly visible far out to sea. The Turkish Commander-in-Chief, Djevad Pasha, sits next to the Kaiser in a staff car and explains the battle to him as they approach Kilid-Bahr. The village itself is still in ruins as a result of British shellfire. (Reel 2) (Tinted orange) On board the Goeben Essad Pasha talks with the Kaiser. (Tinted green) The Turkish flag is raised on the ship and Enver joins in the salute. The Kaiser decorates members of the ship's crew and the Turkish navy. Enver consults with Colonel von Frankenburg, commander of the Asien Korps, while waiting for the Kaiser. (Tinted red) He arrives and the men talk together. The Kaiser decorates more Turkish sailors including some senior officers. The entourage then boards a launch (note the cine-camera in the background) and is taken to the shore (tinting ends). The Kaiser is taken by car to the Heragan Palace and to various mosques in Constantinople (the camera is not allowed inside). In the course of the tour a number of German nurses are presented to him. Outside the Mirasim Kiosk Turkish Janissaries in their full ceremonial dress parade past the Kaiser, complete with their musical instruments, after which he prepares to leave.
