Title:THE EFFECTS OF ATOMIC WEAPONS ON TROOPS IN THE FIELD [Main Title]
Film Number:DRA 1089

Summary:
Description: The film first describes using diagrams the main effects of flash, heat, blast and radiation from a nuclear bomb of 20 kilotons detonated at 2000 ft above ground. It goes on to describe typical troop emplacements dug in at various positions and shows the expected effect on the individuals from the blast. Troops in the open at 3000 yards from ground zero get slightly burnt and temporarily blinded if not sufficiently quick at diving for cover; at 2500 yards, two of the four men at a mortar position are burnt and bruised because of inadequate protection; at 1800 yards, inside a deeply dug aid post all is well, but the troops outside suffer bad burning and bruising; at 1300 yards, troops taking cover at the bottom of a four and a half foot deep slit trench are safe from heat and blast, but will suffer a degree of radiation sickness; troops in a fairly well protected firing post at 800 yards will be fit to fight although will succumb to radiation sickness eventually, while the less well sheltered men will die; inside a tank at the same distance, the men are initially fighting fit but will probably collapse from radiation effects within an hour. The film urges troops to wear correct protection (woollen gloves and scarves) and "above all, dig, dig and keep on digging."
