Summary:Footage of the first flight of the prototype of the BAC TSR2 supersonic strike aircraft.
Description:View of the prototype of the TSR2, XR219, sat on the runway at Boscombe Down, awaiting take off, with Electric Electric Lightning chase plane, XM968, positioned to the right of XR219. With test pilot Roland Beaumont and navigator Donald Bowen on board, XR219 taxis along the runway towards the camera. As the TSR2 takes off, a Westland Whirlwind helicopter hovers by the runway on stand by. A number of trials and experimental aircraft can be seen in the background, including Vulcans, a Valiant and Shackleton. In the foreground a number of observers can be seen, some with cameras [presumably both cine and still]. The TSR2 continues to climb in the sky, with the Lightning chase plane briefly appearing in shot. After successfully completing its first flight, the TSR2 approaches to land at Boscombe Down, accompanied by the Lightning and Canberra chase planes [Canberra serial number WD937). XR219 touches down on the runway, as the two chase planes continue on a low level pass along the airfield. Shortly after landing the brake chute is deployed. A small crowd can be seen observing the landing, with fire engines and an ambulance present in case of an emergency. Film ends with XR219 taxiing out of sight.
