Summary: A comprehensive picture of life on board for the 1500-strong complement of the battleship.
Description: In port: taking on stores; maintenance of engine room (including scrubbing inside of boiler tubes). Routine life: financial administration; mail call; religious provisions; Bridge, and station of Engineer Officer of the Watch; 'specialist craftsmen' (printing room, darkroom, machine shop, seaplane). Rum-ration issue; bakeries and Galleys; (Boy's) mess and wardroom meals (including Paymaster-Commander tasting mess food); canteen. Off-duty hobbies; sick bay. Gun drill: the interior of a 14" turret, the workings of loading machinery etc. Day's end: men sling hammocks. The 'other side' of life, involvement in war, is implied by a sequence suggesting how news of an enemy would arrive, bring the crew to action stations and send the ship and attendant fleet (heavy Arctic weather film) into battle. There is no combat film, but commentary closes with pledge that the ship would show "that spirit which will uphold the tradition and reputation associated with her name."
