RECOGNITION OF AIRCRAFT (SERIES 2) [Series Title]
Summary: This RAF instructional film shows the Supermarine Spitfire's various rôles in different theatres of war and traces the aircraft's evolution from the victory of the Supermarine S-5 in the 1927 Schneider Trophy to the Spitfire Mk F 21.
Description: First part has American commentary over views of Spitfires in action: Hurricanes and Spitfires are seen in flight during Battle of Britain whilst pilot of Heinkel He 111 gasps "Achtung Spitfeuer"; take-off in Gibraltar; over Malta; on ground in India; in flight with invasion stripe markings after D-Day. The aeroplane's versatility is illustrated: on French airstrip camera is fitted by Canadian airmen for photo-reconnaissance ; bomber versions in flight; intercepting V1 flying bomb which explodes; Seafire IIC landing and taking off from aircraft carrier. English commentary then recalls the Spitfire's predecessors: photo of Supermarine S-5 in 1927, S-6 floatplane in flight in 1929 and S-6B in distant flight in 1931 Schneider Trophies. Diagrams relate design evolution up to the latest models, seen in flight.
