Description: Reel 1: [This reel is mute]- RAF airmen playing darts in club. Bill Saunders (Trevor Howard) enters lounge. Saunders' father is present and chatting with a friend, with 'flashbacks” to his son and two friends joining the RAF at outbreak of war (interview, medical etc) and progression of the three through training.
Reel 2: Airman Bill Saunders playing darts with father. Listening to radio broadcast at home. Father discussing son going for promotion. Defiant L6986 landing on airfield. Pilot chats with ground crew. Saunders decides to apply for promotion to Fitter IIE. CO wants to find out why remuster numbers so low on station.
Reel 3: Saunders gets course at Cosford. Sometime later Saunders returns home as a Corporal and informs parents he has passed the selection for a commission. Saunders has interview with CO. Later at home Saunders' father tells him the RAF needs everyone's skills no matter what they may be and importance of everyone doing their part to help win the war - “square peg in a square hole”.
